1.     What does Winston mean when he writes, “If there is hope, it lies in the proles.”  Who are the proles? How does the government keep them quiet and satisfied? – Melany, Henry, Guadalupe, Noelia, Katherine C., Alejandra, Jonathan

2.     “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” What does Winston mean by that? What event did he witness with the proletarian women that made him despair of that ever happening? – Douglas, Nick, Modi,  George, Benedict

3.     What was the prerevolutionary history as told by the government? What was the history of the revolution as told by the government? What eventually happened to the three conspirators, Rutherford, Aaronson, and Jones? – Kaelyn, Stephanie, Johana, Katherine Q., Gabriele

Wednesday, May 16th:  
Questions over John Green's Crash Course Lit: 1984 
You may access the video on youtube.com and you can also read the transcript of the video at the bottom of the video screen.  This will be due on Friday, May 18th.


1.     How does language shape how we see the world?
2.     In 1984, it is not that the government tells its people the opposite of what is true, but that the real issue is that their experiences have become so limited that they lack the perspective and the language to understand and express major concepts such as freedom and knowledge and peace.  Explain how the people lack the language to express complex ideas.
3.     What were the destructive consequences of colonialism that George Orwell (aka Eric Blair) saw as a child and as a young man?  How did Orwell's experience with colonialism influence his feelings about "unfettered" capitalism?

4.    What type of government does Orwell believe that the political structure of  most governments will eventually become?


5.     What types of small victories does Winston engage in? What is the term for this behavior? Why is this a blow against the Establishment?
6.     Why and how is Emmanuel Goldstein used by the government? Do you think he actually exists? Why or why not?
7.     How is Newspeak used to promote the aims of Ingsoc?  Describe Vocabulary A, B, and C.
8.     What is implied by the fact that the appendix is written in contemporary English (not Newspeak) by a scholar living many years after Winston?

P     Please bring your 1984 to class today. We will read pages 87 – 92, which will provide the answers to questions 3 (the differences between pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary England) and 4 (how do the citizens of Oceania treat each other?)

      Who is O'Brien? What do you think the following quotation means, "We shall meet where     there is no darkness." Do you think it is foreshadowing something positive or something negative? Support your opinion. 
      
      Read pages 87 - 92 in 1984: Discussion. The answers to questions 3 and 4 can be found on these pages. 

      Please be aware that the reading logs for pages 105 -136 for 1984  will be due tonight at 11:59. The answers to questions 1 - 5 are also due and the answers to questions 1 - 9 from the video "Crash Course" will be due on Friday, May 18th. 

      Friday, May 18th: 

S    Students will answer these questions and submit to schoology.  Their groups will choose one question to present to the class next week.

1.     What unexpected event occurs between Winston and Julia? What is ironic and even funny about Winston’s thoughts when Julia hands him the note? What effect does Julia’s note have on Winston? - Melany
2.     What is significant about the statue of Cromwell? You will have to do a bit of historical research to answer this question. Maybelin
3.     What to the Proles is a serious piece of news? Is there something similar to this in our society? - Stephanie
4.     What is the significance of the old drunk man’s complaints about the change from pints to half-liters? Has there been a change in society which has been difficult for some people to accept? (pages 87 – 92) - Modi
5.     Why does Winston purchase the piece of coral?  Why is it ironic that Winston chooses not to buy the picture on the wall? - Monai
