Noredink.com - grammar diagnostic
Please bring 1984  to class every day.

Class will divide into their groups and find the answers to the following questions in 1984, which they will submit to turnitincom.  They will then select one of the discussion questions and present their answers to the class, which they will defend by offering textual evidence from 1984 and “real-world” evidence.

You will receive two grades for these assignments: one for your answers to the questions, and one for your presentations to the class.

Pages 1 - 29; 1984 Questions:

1. How does the real world in 1984 (the world that Winston lives in) differ from the “official version “ of how grand and great Oceania is?  Give at least five examples of how the real world of Oceania differs from the “official” version of Oceania. Can you think of five things in our own world that differ from the “official” version of the U.S., or California, or Los Angeles?

2. What are the titles of the government ministries? What is ironic about the titles of these government ministries? What does each ministry actually do? Is there a department in our own country which does the opposite of what it is purportedly set up to do?

3. How is technology used to control the citizens of Oceania? Is there something similar to that in our own culture? How is technology used to control the citizens of the United States?  Is it just the government that tries to control or is it also corporations?

4. What is the effect of living in a society in which there are no clearly defined laws?
Find examples from the book to support your thesis. Some of the examples may be implied.  Is there a similarity with our society with not clearly defined laws?

5. Why is it that Goldstein’s influence never seems to decline? Why doesn’t the government ever seem able to capture him? Is there an equivalent enemy that the U.S. has – one that never seems to be captured or defeated but continues to live on?
