Please bring your Vocabulary Workshop book to class tomorrow. Unit 2, #1 - 10 will be assigned tomorrow. Due date is Tuesday, September 12th on Schoology!

Problematic Vocabulary Words from Unit 1: 

Assuage: a verb
To ease discomfort or bad  feelings.
After the couple’s bitter fight, John assuaged Ann’s hurt feelings by saying he was sorry.

Decadence: a noun
Decadent: adjective
A state of decline or decay from a higher position or place.
Tourists are disappointed when they visit Hollywood; rather than seeing a glamorous city filled with wealthy successful beautiful people, they see a shabby town that has fallen into decadence.
Many historians believe that the reason for Rome’s fall was that it had become decadent.  Romans had become weak due to a lack of inner discipline and overindulgence in food, drink, and sex.

Hiatus: a noun
A break, a gap usually in time
Every summer students enjoy a three month hiatus from school!!!!

Lurid: an adjective
Bright in color or  shocking in intensity or lack of restraint
Many kids like horror movies, the more lurid the better.
TMZ is a website that is known for its lurid and outrageous coverage of the seedy underbelly of Hollywood celebrity life.

Prerogative:
What did Bobby Brown mean when he said “It’s my prerogative?”
Right or entitlement
Some wealthy people feel it is their prerogative to treat waitstaff poorly.

Umbrage: noun
Shade cast by trees; influence or power, offense,
Umbrage when it means to take offense
Michael took umbrage at Carol’s suggestion that he should change his shirts more often.
Kathryn feels that she can get away with murder due to the protection afforded by her father’s umbrage.
