Tuesday, August 15th:
Assigned seats
Went over syllabus
Wednesday, August 16th:
Discussion of portfolio:
The portfolio should contain a collection of your shorter writings which are used to generate ideas, to help you evaluate your ideas and decide on which direction to take in your life: either attend a two-year college, go straight to a four-year university, or enlist in the military, or to attend a technical/vocational training, or job.
The following are frequently asked questions in which you provide answers to important questions about your school or career opportunity.
Your letter of introduction for work or a personal application essay for college.
Activity Two:
Activity Prior Knowledge
1. If you are going to college, why did you make this decision, and where will you go?
2. What do you want to get from your college experience?
3. If you are going into the work world or the military, why are you choosing that option?
4. What do you want from working or entering the military, or any other career you might be considering?
Activity Three:
Exploring key Concepts
Look through the list of adjectives, and choose ten words that most accurately describe yourself and write them on a separate sheet of paper.
Rank the adjectives from most important to least important in describing who you are right now.
Activity Four:
Making Predictions and Asking Questions
1. Why did you rank the adjectives in that particular order?
2. What do your words tell you about your opinion of yourself in terms of readiness for the world or college?
3. What would someone who knows you well think of the words you chose?
4. Based on your analysis of your key concepts, predict what you will need to learn more about to achieve your goals.
5. Predict how well your key concepts will work for you as you move into the next stage of your life.
Activity Five:
Discuss your list of adjectives with people you trust and ask them for their opinion. Just listen! Don't argue. Then write down the main ideas of their comments.
Try to capture the three main points of their comments.
